The Maria Project Presents

MARIA SPEAKS is a 50 minute presentation that addresses the role of intergenerational trauma and domestic violence within the family system over generations. Founder, Ms. Goheen chronicles her family story and Maria's legacy from the age of six. In this presentation, Ms. Goheen gives voice and gives peace to her grandmother Maria Salazar through highlighting the process of developing her Off- Broadway play; designing the Office on Women's Health Funded curriculum Codes of Hope for the New York Family Justice Centers, and her current work within the shelter system in New York City. Using snippets and documentary footage from her play, Ms. Goheen describes the eight year process of finding her family. Maria Speaks inspires and illustrates resilience and healing from surviving within a family of domestic violence and intergenerational trauma ~ to living in hope today.

MARIA’S VOICE is an interdisciplinary piece inspired by Maria Salazar's story and legacy. Maria's Voice inherits the tradition of folklore and storytelling provoking vibrations of emotional memory through percussive dance (TAP), a poet (WORDS) and the melodies of voice (SONG). Conducted By and Featuring Tony Award Winner Savion Glover ~ and using raw images of Maria's story ~ this riveting interdisciplinary piece paints an inspiring movement of transformation onstage. Glover interweaves the complex rhythms of violence, suppression, power and control, highlighting the ultimate release and resilience of the human spirit living within all societies today. MARIA'S VOICE is an unprecedented, reflective live painting that gives voice and gives peace to all of the Maria's of the world.
